Quizlet

I would like to tell you a little bit about Quizlet. It is a website where you are practicing words (glosor). This website is very good when the pupils have English (or some other language) words for homework. When using Quizlet with your pupils, you make the learning of words more varied.
The teacher creates an account. She/he chooses to make flashcards and type down all the words she/he likes the students to learn. When all the words are typed down, from Swedish to English or the other way around, the teacher save his/her work. All the students need is the web-address from the page the teacher makes. There is not much work for the teacher to do, when using this site, which can be good since teachers have a lot to do already.
The pupils or the other hand can choose from many ways to learn the words. First of all, you can just look at the words, both in Swedish and in English and listen to the pronunciation. Then you got two categories to choose from: Study and Play games. When choosing study you can practice spelling the words and you can learn the Swedish words in English. You can also do a test, to check if you have learned all the words. When choosing play games, as many children probably would find most challenging, you can practice your words by playing games.
Important to have in mind if you let your pupils try this site, is to check that everyone has access to internet at home. If not, some other alternative must be given.
The way of learning new words has been discussed a lot lately. To write English words on a piece of paper just so you can read them over and over again until you know them, might not be the best way of learning new words. This website can be an alternative instead of using a “glosbok” (a book where you write down the words you have as homework). I would recommend this site and I will absolutely try it in my class when I become a teacher!

You will find Quizlet at http://quizlet.com/.

  1. This educational tool is extremely useful. I used this by myself to learn French vocabularies. I could choose either memorizing vocabularies with as much time as I want to use or the quizlet was in charge of the speed of showing cards so that I could memorize words efficiently. There are a great number of studying methods for pupils which is more effective than the traditional vocabulary lists that teachers have been using for generations as you mentioned in the text. Moreover, since many educators claim that acquisition of pronunciation can only be achieved early in childhood, it is important to have the education material that enables pupils to be exposed to English at home with the sound effect. I especially liked the game ‘scatter’ and ‘space race’ because I learn new words unconsciously while having a fun. With the quizlet, it no longer requires effort and stress both from teachers and pupils when they tackle vocabulary memorization.
